Spam Phone Calls

As in every office, we have phone lines. Answering these lines is one of my responsibilities as Office Manager, and even though this is 2007, we here at Ryan Whitney & Company prefer to greet our clients with a live voice. So instead of punching in the extension number of the person you are trying to reach, you get . . . me! Screening your calls!

My day can be filled with some pretty interesting calls. For example, I love this one: “May I speak with Ryan Whitney please?” Or even better, “Whitney Ryan, please?”
Why sure, but he is two different people, which one would you like to talk to?

Please note that there is no one here named Ryan Whitney. Or Whitney Ryan. Which leads me to Spam calls (this is what I call those annoying sales calls). “Hey Stephanie, how are you today, can I speak to my buddy Dan please?” This is someone that Dan has never met and I don’t know, but they sure try hard to get in the back door with those ridiculous pleasantries. Or the phone rings, and for a few seconds there’s that hesitation, then a beep, then the recording starts with yet another sales call! At least if I get a live person I can politely ask to be removed from their call list.

Then there are the messages left on the answering machine. Some of these calls fall squarely into the “are you kidding me”? category. “Hi! This is Jane Doe (Fictional name) with (Some credit card company) and we have important information for your business on file here!” Really? I can’t imagine that this method of selling is very effective. And let’s not leave out the dreadful fax calls that try to come through. This alone takes a minimum of 5 minutes to delete, and yeah, I know you know what I mean because this happens to all of us.

So if anyone out there wants to sell me something, please let it be advice on how to keep these unwanted calls from coming in. So far, I can’t seem to make them go away!
